Sardinia’s Online University

Sardinia’s online university is born. The SOFIA project (Online Formation, Teaching and Learning System) will provide, in the 2006-2007 academic year, the first three online BSc in Architecture, Communication Science, and Science of Administration. [...] The creation of the University stems from a competition won by the Unitel Consortium, constituted by the Universities of Cagliari and Sassari. The latter associated with the telecommunication company Tiscali, the Sis Consortium and the companies Tecnofor, Giunti Interactive Labs and Unist, which specialize in the production of eLearning material and videoproduction.

Since 2001, Unist [...] already produces projects [...]for the European Council, Milan’s Poytechnic University, Italian Posts, and other businesses: the accessibility standards are those of the European directives (W3c), and the final result amounts to 60 formative credits. In Turin, a multimedia didactic Campus was created. It is organized as a virtual campus, in which the student can follow lectures, delve further into the content, work together with fellow students and clarify any doubts with the tutor. Books and other material are sent directly to his/her home. To begin, all that is needed is a computer equipped with a basic, 640 Kb high-speed Internet connection.

Unist, the leading centre for the production of multimedia distance-learning courses, has organized a user-friendly digital platform. Its many functions include self-assessment tests, case simulations and educative videogames and it encourages interaction through discussion groups and a direct contact with the tutor. A manager can choose online courses adapted to his/her interests, that s/he can follow where and when s/he wants – even on a business trip, in a car or at the airport. “We have a catalogue of 300 courses and some of the most renowned academics in the world”, underlines Marcello Rinaldi, head of Unist. “This generates a quest for excellence and overturns the demand – offer question.” Unist has created a virtual campus which is a meeting point for students, lecturers and tutors, involved in the articulation of the community and in monitoring the learning process.
